Benedict Cumberbatch Taking Break From Acting After Doctor Strange 2

Benedict Cumberbatch reveals he is taking a break from acting after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, though doesn’t indicate how long. Cumberbatch returns to lead the cast of the Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel alongside Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Benedict Wong as Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness also features the MCU debuts of Xochitl Gomez as the young hero America Chavez, Hayley Atwell as Captain Carter and Patrick Stewart as a version of Professor X from the X-Men.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness picks up sometime after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home in which Strange is still coming to terms with opening the doors to the multiverse and learns he has unleashed a powerful and mysterious new adversary, requiring the help of America Chavez, Wong and Wanda to save multiple realities. Sam Raimi is at the helm of the MCU sequel, having taken over from previous co-writer/director Scott Derrickson, with a script from Loki creator Michael Waldron. The wait for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is finally over, but the wait for his return may take longer than some are prepared for.

While speaking with IGN at the premiere event for the film, Benedict Cumberbatch opened up about his future after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Discussing playing variants of his MCU hero in the sequel, the actor revealed he would enjoy swapping places with a “less busy” variant of himself in real life and is looking to take a break from acting after the film. See what Cumberbatch said below:

“It gets very multiversal in real life as well. I guess [I would be] one that’s less busy, maybe… I might be that very soon, which is nice — taking a bit of a break.”

Even prior to joining the MCU as Doctor Strange, Cumberbatch was an ever-busy actor in both film and television, having risen to stardom with his work on BBC’s Sherlock while subsequently scoring rave reviews in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness and his Oscar-nominated turn in The Imitation Game. Since joining the comic book franchise, Cumberbatch has continued to keep his dance card full with multiple MCU outings, namely Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as 1917 and The Current War, on which he was also an executive producer. Last year alone saw Cumberbatch grace the screen on four separate occasions with the Tom Holland threequel, The MauritanianThe Electrical Life of Louis Wain and his Oscar-nominated performance in The Power of the Dog.

Given he’s enjoyed over a decade straight of consistent work in everything from independent fare to blockbuster tentpoles, it’s understandable Benedict Cumberbatch would want to take a break from acting after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Fellow MCU stars Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield have both shared similar sentiments of wanting to take a step back for a brief period, though luckily for fans of the superhero stars, all have confirmed interest in returning to their beloved roles in the future, with Cumberbatch recently assuring he has no plans to stop playing Doctor Strange in the near future. Audiences can catch up with Cumberbatch’s latest MCU adventure with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness now in theaters.
