With great sadness, we mourn the passing of Marybeth Peters. Marybeth leaves a remarkable legacy. Her vast knowledge of copyright law, and the diverse communities it serves, was the foundation for her leadership as Register of Copyrights and Director of the U.S. Copyright Office from 1994-2010. CCC was enormously honored to have Marybeth serve on our Board of Directors upon her retirement from public service.
Marybeth’s career spanned over half a century, with over 40 years spent at the U.S. Copyright Office. She had the second longest tenure as Register, holding the position during a time of significant technological and legal change. She was a global thought and policy leader and a beloved mentor to many generations of copyright professionals and lawyers.
When Marybeth left the Copyright Office, we were privileged to welcome her to CCC’s Board where she was a Director for seven years from 2011-2017. She served with distinction as a fiduciary of copyright principles and as a mentor and thoughtful advisor to CCC colleagues.
