CoD Modern Warfare 2 May Include Tradeable Skins, Leak Says

Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. The full details of the Activision Blizzard lawsuit (content warning: rape, suicide, abuse, harassment) are being updated as new information becomes available.

A new leak claims Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will feature a mode named DMZ that includes a marketplace for trading and buying in-game items such as skins and blueprints. After a long period of rumors and speculation, Activision Blizzard and developer Infinity Ward confirmed Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 were in the works earlier this year. Such an announcement sparked a wave of confusion, given that the Modern Warfare 2 title already exists thanks to the 2009 Call of Duty release. It seems Activision will differentiate between the two names by leaning heavily into the Roman numeral spelling of the number two for the 2022 installment.

The first Modern Warfare hit store shelves in 2007, providing a groundbreaking experience that effectively launched Call of Duty into the stratosphere. Its sequel followed just a couple of years later, further securing the shooter’s place of dominance on the market. While MW3 doesn’t receive as much love in hindsight, 2019’s Modern Warfare managed to follow in its predecessors’ footsteps to become one of the best-selling entries in Call of Duty history.

Call of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope (via GameRant) recently shared supposed insider details about a third Modern Warfare 2 mode known as DMZ. Apparently, this particular multiplayer mode will boast an in-game marketplace, one wherein players can trade and purchase various items. While playing DMZ, Modern Warfare 2 users can also expect to earn blueprints, skins, and other items that work across online modes and Warzone 2, the leaker added. TheGhostOfHope’s full post reads as follows:

Should this leak prove accurate, it would hardly mark the first time that an Activision-published game boasted such a feature. Many will recall that Diablo III allows players to trade items with other users. This has been the case with the game’s past versions as well, and it seems like the trading ability has proved quite popular because of which there was a holdover from the older Diablo games to the new one. The Diablo game series is home to a large collection of items that players can earn through gameplay (and in some cases, other means too!). Plus, items like the stormshield can also be bought online from websites like yesgamers, and later traded with other players in-game. For now, however, it’s unclear how exactly the publisher plans to operate this particular function in Modern Warfare 2 – assuming TheGhostOfHope leak bears a semblance of truth.

Activision and Infinity Ward remain mum about the specifics with respect to this year’s Call of Duty adventure. The publisher did tease in a quarterly financial report, however, that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will prove the “most advanced experience” in the series to date. This may be thanks to the brand-new game engine that will power both the Modern Warfare sequel and Warzone 2, the latter of which will receive a formal announcement on an unspecified date later this year.
