The poor reaction in Deadpool 2 test screenings to the infamous death scene for Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) led the studio and director David Leitch to include a post-credits tease that the character might still be alive. Vanessa’s death was a central story point in the blood-flecked sequel, starring Ryan Reynolds, who reprised his role from the 2016 original. Audiences were unhappy with “fridging” the character, or killing off a female character to further a male character’s storyline.
The scene is minor, but its implications for Vanessa’s future are large. During the post-credits montage, wherein Wade Wilson undoes the biggest continuity error in his timeline (including a hilarious diss to 2011’s much-maligned Green Lantern flick), he also manages to save Vanessa just before she is killed. This sets the character on the path toward a return in future Deadpool films and allows for her to continue in Wade Wilson’s stories.
Baccarin was interviewed by Syfy regarding the controversial ending for her character. She also spoke on the decision to reverse Vanessa’s death, stating that she and Reynolds were “testing so well” and that the death scene had upset audiences, both in test screenings and online reactions. “I feel like I got a call from David Leitch one day, and he was just like: ‘You know, your [scenes] with Ryan are testing so well in this movie, and people are getting so upset [online] that she’s dead, so we’re gonna have to leave the door open for her to possibly come back.'”
Baccarin’s Vanessa is a character who in the Marvel comic books becomes a superhero in her own right alongside Wade Wilson, known as Copycat. In the films, Vanessa has only ever been Wade’s love interest. The story development of her death, rather than incorporating her fully into Deadpool’s “X-Force,” serves as an abrupt and seemingly meaningless change from Deadpool’s comics. Baccarin has already spoken out about wanting to play Copycat in the films, and the negative reaction to her death proves that audiences wanted to see such a development too.
As Deadpool merges into the MCU with Disney’s Fox acquisition, the current state of his films is unknown—Kevin Feige and Bob Iger have both promised Deadpool will remain rated R, but there have been no further updates on that front. Shawn Levy (The Adam Project) was recently selected to helm the much-anticipated Deadpool sequel, and Baccarin confirmed that she has not yet heard whether her character will return in the MCU. Here’s hoping audiences get to see Vanessa finally become Copycat in live action, with her new lease on life, thanks to Deadpool 2’s post-credits scene.
