Deadpool 3 Writers Address Initially Being Replaced On MCU Sequel

As they get to work on the next installment of the superhero franchise, Deadpool 3 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick open up about nearly not coming back for the film. Ryan Reynolds is returning to lead the cast of the sequel, the first installment for the Deadpool franchise to be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Studios. Joining the franchise star/producer is fellow Deadpool vet Leslie Uggams as the Merc with a Mouth’s former roommate Blind Al, though no other casting decisions have been announced for the film.

Development on Deadpool 3 saw a rocky road even prior to the Disney/Fox merger as the latter studio considered shifting its focus to a potential X-Force movie following the team’s introduction in Deadpool 2. Reese and Wernick originally got to work on penning the script for Deadpool 3 in late 2019 with former Disney CEO Bob Iger indicating it would retain the R-rated sensibilities of its predecessors even while set in the MCU. The studio briefly shifted plans as Marvel and Reynolds met with other writers to pen the script, hiring Bob’s Burgers duo Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin in late 2020, though have once again shifted to those behind the first two Deadpool movies for the MCU sequel.

While speaking with The Playlist to discuss the Netflix thriller Spiderhead, writing duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick opened up about their Deadpool 3 returns. In looking at the MCU sequel originally being written by a different pair, the two addressed initially being replaced for the film, keeping mum on the details of the replacement and expressing their excitement for returning. See what Reese said below:

“Yeah, that did happen. And look…It just came down the way it did, but we’re thrilled to be back is the bottom line. We just couldn’t be happier where we are right now in the mad scientist lab creating fun stuff and hopefully, we’ll get a movie out to you guys soon.”

Though anticipation has remained generally high for Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth in the MCU after the success of the first two films, audiences largely celebrated the news that Reese and Wernick would return to write Deadpool 3. Even outside of the Deadpool franchise, Reese and Wernick have largely scored positive reviews from critics and audiences alike having written both Zombieland movies, which takes a meta approach to the zombie genre in a similar vein to that of Reynolds’ superhero series. While Reese and Wernick’s response to initially being replaced on Deadpool 3 may keep the details of the situation under wraps, it’s clear the two felt some disappointment over nearly not returning for the MCU sequel.

Reese and Wernick aren’t the only ones Reynolds is reuniting with for Deadpool 3 as Shawn Levy is set to direct the MCU threequel. Reynolds and Levy have enjoyed a hot streak in the past couple of years, beginning with the sci-fi comedy Free Guy and Netflix’s sci-fi adventure The Adam Project, leaving many hopeful that the long-awaited Deadpool 3 can match the heights of its predecessors and Reynolds and Levy’s previous collaborations. With Levy confirming that Deadpool 3 won’t likely begin filming until next year due to his TV commitments, audiences will have to keep their eyes peeled for further details on the sequel.
