Evil Dead Video Reveals Never Before Seen Look at 2013’s Gory Reboot

A new video from director Fede Alvarez reveals never before seen photos from the set of Evil Dead. After Army of Darkness in 1992, Sam Raimi left horror fans craving Evil Dead 4 with Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams. That unfortunately never happened, but in 2013, the series was rebooted by Alvarez, with Williams having a short cameo in the post-credits scene before returning to lead the franchise in Ash vs. Evil Dead two years later.

An Evil Dead reboot isn’t exactly what many were hoping for, but it did fairly well with both critics and long-time fans of the franchise. The reboot included all new characters who visit the iconic cabin and read from the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, roughly translated to Book of the Dead. Unlike many horror reboots in the last decade, Evil Dead was able to successfully modernize the franchise while also paying homage to the films that came before it. Evil Dead was also praised for its over-the-top gore, much of which was accomplished practically over CGI.

Evil Dead is celebrating its 9-year anniversary in 2022, which led to Alvarez releasing a new look at his film. The video shared on Alvarez’s Twitter shows the director flipping through Polaroids of the cast he took nearly a decade ago when they were filming the movie. The photos show Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci, and Elizabeth Blackmore, among other cast and crew members. Check out Alvarez’s original tweet below.

Alvarez has shared a lot this year on social media for Evil Dead’s anniversary. In addition to these behind-the-scenes-photos, the director has revealed an Evil Dead script page that involved Mia’s death, but Raimi convinced the director that Levy’s character deserved to live given how much she had endured throughout the hour and a half movie. Alvarez also released a previously unseen alternate ending that paid homage to the ending of the first Evil Dead, where the evil force rushes towards Ash.

Despite Mia being the sole survivor of the reboot, it doesn’t look like Evil Dead 2 will ever happen. Evil Dead Rise is heading to HBO Max later this year from director Lee Cronin, which means Warner Bros. will be more inclined to continue the franchise with that movie’s storyline if it is a success. Alvarez has shown interest in the sequel over the years, keeping fans hopeful that a sequel will happen, but the director has moved on to other horror franchises instead like Netflix’s recent Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel. It looks unlikely at this point a sequel will happen, but maybe something will be announced next year when Evil Dead celebrates its 10-year anniversary.
