Hello from Hippocampus Magazine! We’re sharing a quick update about a change to our next reading period, which was originally set to open September 1, 2022:
Hippocampus Magazine will reopen for creative nonfiction submissions (essay/flash CNF) October 15, 2022, and will accept submissions through Jan. 15, 2023.
This extra six weeks will give our reading teams a little extra time to work through the existing queue, restructure their reading processes, and get ahead before we re-open. This will also allow us to set better expectations moving forward.
As you may know, we state in our guidelines that we typically review work within 3-4 months, but keeping that promise has been tougher lately, even though it’s for good reason! We are IMMENSELY lucky to have so many wonderful creative nonfiction writers who want to publish their work with us, but keeping on top of it all — especially with a 100% volunteer team — ain’t no small potatoes. So, a few major takeaways.
- If you’re excited to submit an essay or flash piece to us, mark your calendar for October 15. We can’t wait to see it!
- If you want to help us diversify the work we accept, read through Hippocampus Magazine submissions faster, and be more responsive to the needs of folks who are submitting to us, volunteer to read with us! Express your interest through this contact form, which we’ll forward to associate editor Rae Pagliarulo. Let us know if you have a preference between reading full-length essays vs. flash!
