June is Bustin’ Out All Over

Richard Rodgers was Jerome Kern’s successor as the greatest melodist on the Broadway stage. From Carousel (1945), the month of June is saluted with this sweet song perfect for ensemble singing. Lyric by Oscar Hammerstein: “To ladies, the men are paying court.” “All the rams that chase the ewe sheep / Are determined there’ll be new sheep /And the ewe-sheep aren’t even keepin’ score!” Musically the part beginning “but it’s cumin’ by gum / you can feel it come,” is extraordinary. Here are four recordings. First, from 2013, is the Klezmer Company Jazz Orchestra with soprano Jennifer Tipton and baritone Graham Fandrei.   — DL
