League of Legends Champion Roadmap Teases Aurelion Sol Rework

Riot Games has released another League of Legends Champion Roadmap with a number of updates on what the League of Legends team has been working on. Riot teased big changes coming to Aurelion Sol, announcing that an entire rework of the champion’s kit is coming in a future patch. The news comes months after Aurelion Sol’s noticeable absence from Riot’s “Choose a Champion Update” poll earlier this year, leaving many fans concerned about the champion’s future.

To keep up with the seemingly unending popularity of League of Legends, developer Riot Games releases Champion Roadmaps every few months to give the community a sense of what is coming to the world’s most popular MOBA. Aurelion Sol, a champion who is considered one of League of Legends’ most ambitious and hyped characters in the game’s history, has remained at the bottom of player pick rates and has received little to no help from Riot in reaching the mainstream champion pool. After years of neglect from the developers and players, Aurelion Sol just might break out of the bottom tier, as was teased in this month’s Champion Roadmap.

In an unusually written form of the Champion Roadmap, League of Legends producer Reav3 confirmed in a new Riot blog post that new changes are coming to Aurelion Sol, ultimately changing the way his gameplay mechanics work while staying true to his beloved thematics. Reav3 noted that the team had considered making small changes to the champion, but ultimately decided it would be best to rework his kit entirely. Reav3 made it clear that the team will design the new mechanics in a way that delivers fun and intuitive gameplay while enhancing Aurelion Sol’s already notable theme/persona.

For a champion that had a lot of excitement revolving around its release to League of Legends, Aurelion Sol simply lacked any enticing gameplay workings to make him worth playing after launch. While the champion’s design and narrative are among the game’s most interesting, they were not enough to make players want to play him consistently. With the new rework on the way, Aurelion Sol could have a future as a popular pick in solo queue – or even pro play.

Riot’s Champion Roadmap also teased a few new League of Legends champions that players could see on the Rift later this year. Although not too many details were given, Riot gave fans a look at a new Void jungler, an unspecified (but possibly sea-themed) champion, and an update on the champion Udyr’s changes. Reav3 added that Riot will not be releasing champions as often as they usually do (to commit to fine-tuning existing characters and perfecting new releases), but will try to release at least one new champion for each role every year.
