Ludacris Offers Hopeful Comment About Fast & Furious Franchise Future

Fast & Furious star Ludacris teases the future of the car racing franchise after Fast X. Ludacris debuted in the Fast & Furious franchise in the role of Tej Parker back in 2003 with 2 Fast 2 Furious. Since then, he has reprised the role in nearly every Fast & Furious film that has been released since, including last year’s F9. Ludacris, who is also a rapper, has also acted in Crash and lent his voice to the Netflix animated series Karma’s World.

Ludacris will return to Fast & Furious in the tenth film, along with fellow franchise vets Vin Diesel, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Charlize Theron, among other stars. Fast & Furious 11 will follow Fast X, marking the end of the series, at least for Dom Toretto’s (Diesel) main arc. Fast X and its follow up will be released in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Beyond that, it remains to be seen what will come next for the blockbuster franchise.

Despite the upcoming sequels being said to end the series, Ludacris offers hopeful commentary about the future of the Fast franchise in a recent interview with Fatherly. Drawing a comparison with the Jurassic franchise, the actor points out that the Fast series could “live on forever” through other iterations and interpretations of its world. Check out the full statement from Ludacris below:

“All great things come to an end. We’re shooting Fast 10 now, and that is the final chapter. But that doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right? Look at Jurassic Park. That ended. But they reinvigorated it in another way. So I hope the Fast franchise will live on forever. Who knows, it might be our children who continue it, someday.”

The comparison to the Jurassic series is certainly compelling. Though there had not been nearly as many Jurassic Park films before Colin Trevorrow made Jurassic World in 2015, both franchises have loyal fanbases and have seen tremendous commercial success. The Fast series has a dedicated fanbase, many of whom have followed the series since its inception in the early 2000s. Furthermore, Fast & Furious has so many characters and has been inhabited by so many actors that there would be seemingly endless possibilities for future explorations of the universe, even if the likes of Dominic Toretto, Letty (Rodriguez), and Tej were not involved. In fact, there has already been one big screen spinoff that can show a way forward for the franchise: Hobbs and Shaw.

A future for the Fast franchise will depend on the success of Fast X and its sequel. Actors from the film have promised that the newest Fast film will return to its roots, as some viewers have been vying for. If Fast X director Louis Leterrier capitalizes on that Fast & Furious nostalgia effectively, Fast X could bode well for potential future spinoff series with throwbacks to previous characters. Time will tell as Fast X finishes production and hits theaters in 2023.
