Oprah Winfrey & Viola Davis to Unite for New Netflix Special Interview

Viola Davis is to join Oprah Winfrey for a sit-down interview in, Oprah + Viola: A Netflix Special Event. The 56-year-old actress rose from humble beginnings to become one of Hollywood’s most prestigious talents. Beginning her career on Broadway, Davis went on to win an Oscar for her portrayal of Rose Lee Maxson in the film adaptation of Fences, a play which she had claimed a Tony Award for just years earlier. Her other award-winning work includes major titles such as The Help and the 2020 film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, for which she took home two SAG Awards. For her portrayal of Annalise Keating in the hit ABC series How to Get Away with Murder, Davis also claimed an Emmy Award for lead actress.

Netflix has now confirmed that Davis will open up about her life and career with Oprah Winfrey in an interview special, Oprah + Viola: A Netflix Special Event. Ahead of the release of her memoir, Finding Me, later this month, Davis will reveal how she achieved peace and a sense of self by “giving up hope that the past could be different.” Delving into her difficult childhood, in which she experienced poverty, abuse, and “all the things that cause you pain,” Davis will also explain how she has climbed the ladder of stardom to become one of Hollywood’s most renowned actresses.

The 48-minute special is produced by Tara Montgomery and Terry Wood through Harpo, with Brian Piotrowicz, also attached as co-executive producer. Oprah + Viola: A Netflix Special Event to Oprah’s already glowing repertoire of A-list interviews, which includes sit-downs with the likes of Rihanna, Ellen DeGeneres, Barack Obama, Whitney Houston, Kim Kardashian and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Coming amidst a busy year for both women, Davis is currently starring in the new historical epic, The Woman King, and will also portray Michelle Obama in the upcoming anthology series, The First Lady. Meanwhile, Winfrey is set to produce the musical adaptation of The Color Purple, after playing Sofia in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 classic. Oprah + Viola: A Netflix Special Event debuts on April 22.
