Shazam 2 Will Not Explain DC Hero’s New Costumes | Screen Rant

Director David F. Sandberg has revealed that his upcoming film Shazam!: Fury of the Gods will not give an explanation for the heroes’ new costumes. The first Shazam! movie released in April 2019 as the seventh installment of the DC Extended Universe, and it received positive feedback from both critics and audiences alike. In the film, 14-year-old Billy Batson (played by Asher Angel) gains the power to transform into a grown, middle-aged superhero, complete with a red outfit sporting a white cape and lightning emblem.

It was revealed last year that the titular superhero, played by Zachary Levi, will be sporting a brand-new outfit in the highly anticipated sequel, as will the other members of the “Shazamily”. During last year’s DC FanDome event, a behind-the-scenes video was released showing a taste of what these new outfits will look like in action. The new costumes are more stylized versions than were seen in the 2019 film, adding more texture and making subtle design changes like Mary Bromfield’s dress.

Sandberg recently revealed on his Twitter account that Shazam!: Fury of the Gods will not explain why the heroes’ suits will look different from their designs in the first movie. The director goes on to profess that if he were asked about the wardrobe upgrade, he was hoping to provide the simple answer that Barry Allen messed with the timelines. However, since the release of Sandberg’s sequel has now been pushed up to before the release of The Flash, that changes his plans a bit. Check out his post below:

Shazam!: Fury of the Gods has had an interesting road. Many behind-the-scenes photos and videos have been posted online from a few cast and crew members, including newcomer Rachel Zegler (of West Side Story fame). According to one shot from the DC FanDome footage, it seems like Zegler will be playing a new love interest for Batson’s foster brother Freddy Freeman (played by Jack Dylan Grazer). Also debuting in the film will be Helen Mirren as Hespera and Lucy Liu as Kalypso; they will be the villains of the film, both daughters of Atlas and supposedly the furious gods the title is referring to. Aside from these casting details and the official look at the characters’ new costumes, there hasn’t been a whole lot revealed about the DC sequel.

Since the outfit upgrade in the upcoming Shazam! sequel will not be explained, this may generate some concern from the fans. The decision probably won’t receive a huge amount of backlash, but even though Sandberg has thought of an explanation for the new costumes, small slip-ups like this can sometimes be enough to raise worry from some hardcore fans. Nevertheless, little details should not hinder the overall plot or enjoyment of Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, and it is still one of the most anticipated additions to the DCEU.
