Thor 4’s Gorr Is One Of Chris Hemsworth’s Favorite MCU Villains

Chris Hemsworth has named Christian Bale’s Thor: Love and Thunder villain Gorr the God Butcher as one of his favorite enemies throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Having been a staple of the MCU since his debut in 2011’s Thor, Hemsworth has faced droves of baddies in his time as an Avenger and beyond. His latest adventure, the Taika Waititi-directed Love and Thunder, will now see him take on Bale’s fanatical Gorr.

The character of Gorr is a fairly recent addition to Marvel comics. Debuting in 2013’s Thor: God of Thunder #1 as a religious zealot, Gorr loses his religion and pledges to slay every god in the universe after his family is killed. Blaming indifferent gods for his loss and suffering, he assumes the title of the God Butcher. Naturally, this god-killing mission eventually leads him to Thor, the God of Thunder. Gorr will be brought to life in Love and Thunder by Bale, who recently admitted he didn’t know what he’d be getting himself into by taking a role in the MCU.

Still, Bale’s not being prepared for the rabid fandom seemingly hasn’t hurt his work on the movie. In a recent interview with IGN, Hemsworth spoke about working with Bale and how his performance has already cemented Gorr as one of Hemsworth’s favorite Marvel villains. Citing Bale’s nuance and complexity, Hemsworth called his costar not only one of his favorite Marvel villains, but one of his favorite actors working today. Check out his comments below:

Everything you’d imagine [Bale] would bring to it… Nuance and complexity and truth, levity. He’s one of my favorite actors working, and I was so excited he agreed to jump on board here. What’s he’s done is that he’s definitely one of my favorite villains in the Marvel universe.”

Hemsworth naming Bale’s Gorr as one of his favorite MCU baddies says a lot. Having appeared in more than a dozen MCU projects (including shorts, video games, and post-credits scenes) over the past ten years, Hemsworth has gone up against some of the heaviest hitters in the history of Marvel. So singling out Gorr is a testament to what Bale is bringing to the role. And Hemsworth apparently isn’t alone in praising Bale’s villain as Gorr was one of Marvel’s Highest rated villains during test screenings for the movie.

It’s unknown at this point whether or not Gorr will be returning for future Marvel installments or if he’ll be a one-and-done villain not to be seen again, like Christopher Eccleston, who played the Dark Elf Malekith in Thor: The Dark World. If Bale’s villain is as imposing as his costar and test audiences seem to imply, it might make sense to keep Bale around past Thor: Love and Thunder. With Thanos out of the way, Phase 4 of the MCU is going to have some big shoes to fill as far as villains go. If Gorr is as good of a foil as he’s reported to be, he could well be the right choice to take on that role.
