Weather Report [by Lewis Saul]

Warm and sunny, with intermittent showers of be-bop, funk, and … jazz fusion.

At some point in the 80’s that term became a bad word. Perhaps jazz fission would have been better. (clean energy)

Weather Report was born after the great Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter ended their tenure with Miles Davis with two spectacular albums, In a Silent Way (1969) and Bitches Brew.(1970), and decided to form their own group.

They released 15 albums, pretty much once a year between 1971 and 1986. Choosing one track per album is today’s challenge:

1. Weather Report (1971)

Milky Way

2. I Sing the Body Electric (1972)

Unknown Soldier

3. Sweetnighter (1973)

Boogie Woogie Waltz

4. Mysterious Traveller (1974)

Cucumber Slumber

5. Tale Spinnin’ (1975)

Between the Thighs

6. Black Market (1976)

Cannon Ball

7. Heavy Weather (1977)

Palladium

8. Mr. Gone (1978)

River People

9. 8:30 (1979)

10. Night Passage (1980)
