Why Jujutsu Kaisen’s Satoru Gojo Covers His Eyes | Screen Rant

Why does Gojo cover his eyes in Jujutsu Kaisen? Gege Akutami’s manga Jujutsu Kaisen (and its Studio MAPPA anime adaptation) is set in a magical world in which all living beings emit a type of energy called “cursed energy” that’s caused by the negative emotions they feel. While powerful humans known as jujutsu sorcerers can control and utilize this energy, regular humans cannot which results in the creation of “cursed spirits” – monstrous spiritual beings born of collective negative emotions who seek to cause humanity harm.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s main protagonist is a seemingly ordinary teenager named Yuji Itadori who is a member of his high school’s Occult Research Club. His life is forever changed after the club gets its hands on a cursed object – the finger of a powerful cursed spirit called Ryomen Sukuna – which attracts several other cursed spirits who attack Yuji’s friends. To save his pals, Yuji eats the cursed finger and becomes a vessel for Sukuna but is soon sentenced to death by high-up jujutsu sorcerers who deem him too dangerous with the cursed spirit possessing him.

Luckily, a jujutsu sorcerer named Satoru Gojo manages to arrange for Yuji to temporarily stay alive under the condition that he consumes Sukuna’s other cursed digits and absorbs even more of his cursed energy – after which he’ll be executed. Gojo takes Yuji under his wing and soon becomes a mentor to the teen after enrolling him at the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School where he learns to harness Sukuna’s cursed energy. Gojo himself houses a massive amount of cursed energy and is consequently one of the most powerful characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. With his shock of white hair, he has quite a distinctive appearance too and is known for often wearing sunglasses or a blindfold – but why does Gojo usually cover his eyes? According to Jujutsu Kaisen lore, Satoru Gojo covers his eyes for good reason and it’s related to a powerful technique he possesses known as Six Eyes.

It’s a hereditary technique exclusive to the Gojo family that is so rare no two Six Eyes users have existed at the same time. Six Eyes gives its users incredibly detailed perception and immense brain processing power which allows them to see different types of cursed energy in extreme detail. It also allows users to harness the power of another inherited Gojo family technique called Limitless which grants the ability to distort and manipulate space at will.

While Six Eyes is an incredibly useful technique when it comes to fighting cursed spirits, it has certain drawbacks. Because Six Eyes is such a powerful technique, it tends to fatigue its users who cover their eyes to combat its drain on their stamina and energy – hence why Gojo often wears blindfolds or sunglasses. However, according to Jujutsu Kaisen creator Akutami, being blindfolded or bespectacled doesn’t hinder Satoru Gojo’s Six Eyes technique in any way and he’s still able to see cursed energy in high definition even with his eyes covered.
