Zoe Saldaña Compares Working On The Adam Project To Guardians of the Galaxy

Zoe Saldaña has recently compared working on Ryan Reynold’s new Netflix film The Adam Project to her work on the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Directed by Shawn Levy, who previously helmed the Reynolds-led surprise hit Free Guy, the film follows Reynold’s time-travelling pilot Adam Reeves after he crash lands in 2022 and seeks help from his 12-year-old self. Originally picked up by Paramount with the intention of having Tom Cruise star in the leading role, the project was later delayed until Netflix picked up the distribution rights in 2020.

Also starring fellow Marvel alumni Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner as Reynold’s parents, Louis and Ellie Reed, Saldaña rounds out the cast as Reynold’s love interest from the future, Laura. No stranger to working on some of the biggest franchises on the planet, not only has Saldaña played Thanos’ adopted daughter Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, but she has also appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Trek, and Avatar on top of her MCU credentials. Saldaña is currently in the process of filming her return as Gamora in what is expected to be the final film in the Guardians of the Galaxy series.

With Netflix ramping up promotion for The Adam Project, Saldaña spoke with Syfy Wire about her time on the original project, and compared it to working with James Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy. Saying that she likes “working on things that were conceived out of thin air,” Films like The Adam Project‘s original nature lead Saldaña to “look at the filmmaker with so much more reverence.” However, the actress also praised Gunn’s approached to Guardians, calling it “very nuanced.” Read her full comments below:

“I find it more rewarding [to act in movies based on original ideas] because it’s such a blank canvas, and you get to really pepper in the layers that you imagine for it.

There’s something really fascinating about working with original content that makes me really look at the filmmaker with so much more reverence. I like working on Guardians of the Galaxy because James Gunn still also manages to protect some of the innovation and makes it very nuanced. That was also lovely. But I like working on things that were conceived out of thin air.”

The predominance of mega IP franchises like Marvel and Star Wars in the current marketplace is increasingly becoming a hot topic of debate. While some filmmakers such as Ridley Scott and Francis Ford Coppola have loudly and repeatedly bemoaned the impact that large IP films are having on original blockbusters, others are finding new and inventive ways to turn such fare into more innovative films. Just as Saldaña still praises Gunn for his ability to “protect some of the innovation,” other filmmakers like The Batman director Matt Reeves have proven themselves capable of finding inspired and ground-breaking ways to tackle even the most well-known of IPs.

Of course, as The Adam Project also proves, the days of entirely original films are still far from over and with the various streaming services actively competing for audience shares there will likely be plenty more original content to enjoy for years to come. Certainly, Saldaña will also have plenty of time to work on films “conceived out of thin air” once she finishes up as Gamora on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the planned Avatar sequels. In the meantime, fans will also be able to check out her brand new role in The Adam Project on Netflix.
