“Discover the Surprising Truth: Are You Writing from a Place of Abundance or Scarcity?”
In the rollercoaster world of writing, knowing your niche can spell the difference between thriving creatively and wandering aimlessly. Have you ever tried to pick a favorite book, only to realize it’s like choosing your favorite child? Similarly, writers often grapple with finding their ‘category,’ grappling with whether to align with personal passions or market demands. Just as Lev from David Benioff’s City of Thieves navigates the harrowing landscape of 1942 Leningrad while searching for a dozen eggs—a virtually impossible task— aspiring writers must search for their unique voice amidst the chaos. In a realm where some thrive on rich complexities while others flourish in simplicity, understanding your category can bolster your writing career. So, how do you uncover your niche and leverage it for success? Dive in as we explore this pivotal concept! LEARN MORE
Knowing your category will help you thrive in your writing career
I’ve been re-reading David Benioff’s City of Thieves novel recently. It follows Lev, a 17-year-old, trying to find a dozen eggs in 1942 Leningrad. (If “Benioff” sounds familiar, that’s because he co-wrote HBO’s Game of Thrones adaptation).
Lev was trying to find the eggs at the orders of a Russian secret police colonel. Here’s the catch: It was close to impossible to find eggs in World War II Russia, according to the novel’s setting. Lev, the novel’s narrator, described the situation well:
“No one but the best connected could still feed a pet, so the pets fed us.”
Lev also talked about how the “fat” and the “thin” survived at the time. There were two prevailing theories on the matter.
Some said those who were fat before the war were more likely to survive. A week without food wouldn’t turn a chubby person into a skeleton. The opposing theory claimed that skinny people were more used to eating little, so their bodies wouldn’t be as shocked with starvation.
In an environment of great scarcity, how these two types of people survive is crucial. That’s because one survival method won’t work for the other.
