What’s your main goal as a writer? Getting published? Making money? Being able to give up the day job?

Or is it simply resonating deeply with your readers? That’s my main goal and has been for a while. It’s no coincidence that since setting that goal I’ve been widely published, made decent money as a writer, and been able to give up the day job.

Writing that resonates deeply with your readers is what leads to success and is probably the most satisfying part of being a writer. Because it’s not, for most of us, the wonderfully fulfilling vocation we thought it might be.

Colleen M. Story wrote recently about how oddly disappointing the life of a writer can be. The day you get that first book published is often the culmination of a life-long dream, yet it can be a total anti-climax. Winning awards and accolades isn’t as life-changing as we expect. Nor is hitting a bestseller list.

These things matter, of course. They make us very happy in the moment. They’re something to be proud of, for sure. But the real reward of being a writer is often something different, found somewhere unexpected.
