But I knew it wasn’t true that he was the one who ended things with my mom, and not because my grandma was intrusive. And I knew my mom hadn’t had an affair with my dad’s brother. I knew my dad’s drinking wasn’t caused by stress from his job, at least not all of it. But there were many parts that I did accept as true because they fit with who I knew him to be, like that he took an IQ test in the army that said he was smart, even though he had dropped out of high school.
