I’ve talked before about learning a second language and how it helps me improve my writing — and I’ll probably talk about it again.

One of the things I do to maintain my fluency in Spanish is watch TV. A lot. If I’m not reading or listening to a book, I watch a half hour to an hour of Spanish-language TV pretty much every day.

I have a subscription to RTVE’s streaming service, and it’s the best five bucks a month I’ve ever spent. There are so many awesome Spanish shows on there that aren’t available many other places — if anywhere else (side note for anyone considering the subscription, there are no English subtitles; it’s Spanish or nothing).

The show I finished up a few weeks ago is called El Ministerio del Tiempo. For those who don’t know, it’s kind of a cross between Doctor Who and Time Bandits. It’s goofy and hilarious, and yet it’s simultaneously unafraid to tackle big issues.

Its criticisms of the United States are often particularly scathing, especially since they’re right on the money pretty much 100% of the time.

It’s a wonderful show to watch for those who want to have fun while learning a little about Spanish history, though, given its nature, it does take plenty of artistic…
