"Exposed but Unpaid: Are Writers Sacrificing Their Art for Illusions of Recognition?"

It’s like being the underappreciated star of a show, basking in the spotlight while the producers rake in the big bucks. When visibility doesn’t pay the bills

Several months ago, I received a message from the founder of a publication I’d contributed writing to a few years back. It was to inform me they’d included passages from my writing in a new product they were selling.

Initially, I was taken aback. This was the first I was hearing about the quotes’ inclusion — and I hadn’t given prior consent.

They hadn’t offered me any compensation. Given the commercial nature of the product, I would have expected them to. The site also had substantial online presence, with affiliate links and what appeared to be other revenue streams.

I couldn’t help but wonder: were they allowed to do this?

A closer look at the site’s terms revealed that yes, they were. They had established broad rights to indefinite use (commercial included) of contributors’ content, without monetary compensation.

Fair enough. Huh. That’s disappointing, but also, I should’ve read the fine print, I thought.

As I dug further, I learned the platform makes millions of dollars per year — between five and 14 million, according to one estimate. While I can’t be sure of the exact amount, that figure seems plausible given the site’s massive social media reach.

It led me to wonder how many other content contributors were in the same position — and what were we really gaining from it?

As writers, many of us are eager for our voices to be heard and shared with a wider audience.

A platform isn’t merely a scrappy passion project if it’s also generating millions of dollars in annual profit.

In this era of fleeting engagement, where reading rates seem to be steadily declining, we’ll seize any opportunity. Exposure on a platform with such a vast following feels like an honor and a thrill.
