The Price for Artificial Nativeness May be Losing Your Unique Voice
Although I have been exposed to English my whole life, mastering the language feels unattainable. The further I drift away from the “beginner’s level” shores into the open sea, the more I feel surrounded by an endless ocean with no “native” land in sight.
However, I think I’ve found a motorboat — ChatGPT — at the cost of becoming a lousy swimmer. It is a terrific tool, but it can also ruin you as a writer if you are not careful.
The first time I had to produce a rather complex document in English was during my bachelor’s degree. I was exempted from all Japanese classes and had to earn credits in other courses. Fortunately, I was allowed to take graduate classes, including those taught by world-class visiting professors.
I would die before enduring the horror of revisiting those papers. I neither used nor knew of any tools to aid my writing like Grammarly. The result? Unbelievably bad writing.
