outbreak of hostilities in Europe.

The Russian Revolution took a backseat to the Nazi-Soviet non-aggression pact.

Stalin’s Great Purge was put on hold by Germany’s invasion of Russia.

Official American neutrality was interrupted by the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor.

The Enlightenment was suspended until further notice by the race to build an atomic bomb.

But nothing overtook the murder of the Jews.
