The biggest enemy of free speech right now isn’t who you think it is
The free speech debate is raging in the United States with a grating lack of nuance. Much of the concerns have been overblown. Cancel culture has been conflated with tyranny, as if people are not allowed to choose where to focus their attention and who to support.
Examples of governmental overreach in terms of violating free speech are both exaggerated and misdirected. There’s exactly one example, with actions spanning one day, and that was primarily carried out by a private company which has half the country in a tizzy. Of course, I’m speaking of the Hunter Biden story being suppressed on social media, in response to a Department of Homeland Security suggestion that it might be misinformation.
A much more serious act of impinging on First Amendment rights is the banning of books going on in communities across the country. However, banning books from public schools is a far cry from outright banning them, and unless and until it increases in scope, it’s not cause for overwhelming concern.
