So, how exactly did I turn my fourth language into a fountain of expressive creativity? Was it sheer willpower, a hidden library, or perhaps a dash of good fortune? Buckle up, because I’m about to unravel the secrets behind effective writing that goes beyond mere volume! LEARN MORE.
Oh So Clear
Or why you won’t improve by just writing more
English isn’t my first language. Nor is it my second. Heck, it’s not even my third. It’s my fourth language. And I only really mastered it in my 20s.
Sure, as a kid I spent a few weeks in English-speaking countries, learning such complex conversational gems as “Hello” and “Where’s the bathroom?” But besides that, I didn’t learn much. After all, one has to live in a country where English is spoken or go to an English school to really learn the language, right?
Well, no. Not at all.
I never lived in an English-speaking country, and I definitely didn’t attend an English school. And yet, here I am, typing away in the language I feel most fluent writing in.
So how did that happen?
Did I date Queen Elizabeth? Join an English karaoke club? Or did I accidentally lock myself in an English library for a couple of weeks, reading the dictionary for fun and surviving by licking the glue off book bindings?
Well, it was kind of the last one — except instead of a library, it was the Internet and Amazon.com. Both gave me a never-ending buffet of English reading material, right at my fingertips.
