The counterintuitive secret to creating awe and wonder in your audience
Story Luck is a 501c3 dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling.
As such we are constantly talking shop. Board member and best friend, Noah Firestone likes to say there are only two great procrastination motivators: Fear of Failure and Fear of Success. When it comes to storytelling, this often manifests in our endless pursuit of the perfect polished presentation.
But maybe smooth is working against you!
If your work looks too polished, implement the illusion of spontaneity
Chris Do of The Futur shared a revealing anecdote illustrating this point.
He was sitting in a workshop when a student asked a question that seemingly stumped the teacher — a renowned speaker and marketing guru. The teacher fumbled over his words, appearing genuinely caught off-guard. He said, “You know what, give me a minute, and I’ll circle back to this question. I need someone in the back to do a little research for me.”
After this brief moment of vulnerability, he recovered brilliantly and, with input from his tech crew, he crafted a satisfying answer.
Chris was so moved by this spontaneous interaction he signed up for the same workshop in a different city, eager to witness more of the master’s improvisational brilliance.
Have you already guessed the surprise?
Another attendee asked a nearly identical ‘curveball’ question. The teacher’s response? The exact same ‘stumble,’ followed by the same ‘recovery,’ culminating in the identical solution.
The ‘authentic’ was meticulously rehearsed — down to the strategically placed fumbles. Chris glanced around the room and saw the wonder on everyone’s faces. Not a single person realized they were watching a performance rather than participating in a unique, magical moment with their favorite teacher.
