Unlock the Secret Writing Techniques Alexandra Brown Chang Swears By—And How They Can Transform Your Creativity Overnight

Today’s Write Now interview features Alexandra Brown Chang, author of BY INVITATION ONLY.
Who are you?
By Invitation Only will be my first published novel. It falls into the Young Adult category, though I love exploring other genres as well. In the future, I hope to write a mystery/thriller — one of my favorite genres to read! I also like exploring different formats, such as screenplays and pilots. Growing up, I embraced every opportunity to write: I joined the school newspaper, worked on short films, and launched a lifestyle website. In terms of themes, I tend to gravitate toward coming-of-age stories, because I truly believe that you can come of age at any age! This concept is not merely limited to the teenage years. We are constantly evolving as human beings, in all of our life stages.
What do you write?
I love writing anywhere with my dog, Clementine. She’s the best writing companion! I usually work in my office at home, where I’m surrounded by art, books, and plenty of candles. It’s my favorite space, as it has ample natural light, and I love sitting among the artworks I’ve collected over the years.
When do you write?
During the week, I typically write at night after work. On the weekends, I’ll write during the day, starting in the mid-morning.
Why do you write?
Because I love it! I’m constantly writing and dreaming up new ideas. Storytelling in any format brings me so much joy. In addition to reading books, I try to see as many films, T.V. shows, musicals, and plays as possible. As an art form, musicals have particularly inspired me over the years. Some of my childhood favorites include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Legally Blonde, and Wicked. These productions still inspire me to this day! Working on a musical or a movie musical is another dream job of mine.
How do you overcome writer’s block?
Whenever I’m experiencing writer’s block, I spend some time outdoors, far away from my laptop! Taking a walk always helps me think more clearly.
Bonus: What do you enjoy doing when not writing?
Traveling, visiting museums, thrifting, hiking, playing tennis, and spending time with my family.
My thanks to Alexandra Brown Chang for today’s interview.
