Finally, via the Media tab, you can input royalty-free images from Openverse and Pexels, complete with attribution. Just enter a search term and click on a result you like.

Once satisfied, publish your changes via the Save/Publish button.

By the way, if you built a new layout from scratch with the Page Editor, you still need to set the new page as your front page. 

For that, go to Settings → Reading. At the top, under Your homepage displays, switch to A static page. Pick the page you just created from the drop-down menu under Homepage, and save it at the bottom.
