I went on a search for a new writing group recently and it was a quick reminder that not all writing groups are created the same. I’ve been in writing groups that squelched by creativity, groups that were perfectly nice but just not for me, and those where I felt just comfortable to be.

For those unfamiliar who have mostly have written solo, here’s a quick guide of the various components of a writing group that could make or break it for you.

Location

You know the adage: Location, location, location. The first big decision in this category is in-person or online.

Online has a lot of benefits for those who are not close to any groups or have issues with mobility or transportation. You get to join a group from the comfort of your own home, and being online can be a nice social buffer for those who are more tentative with new social situations.

I’m personally a little burnt out on socializing in online spaces and prefer to find something that has a “3rd place” quality to it. You may too.
