I almost slipped back into burnout last week — until I remembered I have a system to deal with task anxiety

I came back from a short holiday with my kids this week, and as soon as I walked through the door, I felt completely stressed out with all the unfinished tasks waiting for me. Even opening my email or looking at my calendar felt daunting, and I recognised the familiar tight chest, headache, and creeping anxiety — all precursors to burnout, a place I’ve been before and don’t want to revisit.
I grabbed my laptop, notebook, and went to a cafe.
Then, for immediate relief, I made a brain dump list. It ended up filling a whole A4 page (I turned my notebook sideways). It felt like a massive relief to get everything out of my head and onto paper. Seeing it all laid out felt freeing, giving me the distance I needed to look at things more clearly. And then I went about sorting those tasks within 30 minutes.
