Writers and online content creators are constantly being told to “pick a niche.” But how, exactly, does one do that? And how can you be sure that the niche you select is one that contains an available audience?

In this story, I’m going to suggest that writing niches are actually grown, not chosen, and show you how to do exactly that. Let’s go!

The intersection of “knowing” and “caring”

A lot of online writers trap themselves right off the hop by jumping deeply into a subject about which they’re extremely knowledgeable — but don’t care about at all. These are the folks you see writing dry and lifeless prose about their fields of expertise, totally blind to the reality that their lack of passion on the subject shines through everything they put down on paper.

Don’t get me wrong. There’s a time and place for informative, educational content on the relative merits of annuities featuring prominently in a retirement plan or how to replace a cracked heatsink in a gaming PC. Especially when it comes from true experts on the subjects.

Hell, it can even be downright entertaining, if the writer actually cares about what he or she is writing about.
