At first I was concerned about revisiting a book I wrote in 2011. Reading your old work can be an exercise in humility, and I hadn’t looked at those words since they were first published. But much to my surprise, I’ve found the experience to be spiritually gratifying. It’s like sitting down in a room with a younger version of myself and listening to a long and enthusiastic conversation.

I only regret that I can’t offer a few words of encouragement back.

Lately I’ve been experimenting with audio recordings and it’s given me more insight into the power of writing. For most of my life, I’ve been fixated on the written word. In grade school and high school, fantasy books were a means of escape. When you find yourself powerless and in an abusive situation, you can survive by casting your mind into the dream of the life you wish you had.

Words have never been only blotches of ink for me. They’re magical things. They’re close and trusting friends. They’re a portal into another reality. They’re whispers of eternal wisdom.
