How to lock in the key element that keeps readers turning pages
The holidays are over, and as the new year settles in, our collective consciousness shifts toward the next celebration: Valentine’s Day. While I’m not here to talk about romance, I do want to explore a concept that’s near and dear to me as a teacher and guide for writers — infusing heart into your stories.
When I say “heart,” I don’t mean love stories or grand gestures. I mean something deeper, something that resonates long after a reader has closed the book. The heart of a story is what gives readers a reason to pick up your book and an even bigger reason not to put it down until they’ve devoured it. It’s also what makes them remember your story and its characters long after they’ve moved on to their next read.
A book without heart is like a song without melody — it might have all the right notes, but it won’t stay with you. It won’t hum in your head or stir your emotions.
