After six months of writing, researching, and investing in different tools, I finally published my second romance novel. But unlike my first book (where I paid $5000 to a company to handle everything), I decided to take full control of the process this time and self-publish.

I wanted to know exactly how much money and effort it takes to publish a book independently (so I could know later if a company is offering me a good deal) and if it is true that you could get started without paying a cent (which was hard to believe for me).

In this article, I break down every cost I incurred, so if you’re wondering how much it takes to launch your own book, you’ll know exactly what to expect. Some expenses were necessary, others were personal choices, but one thing became clear: while you can publish a book without paying a single dollar, investing in the right areas makes a huge difference.

Proofreading, grammar editing, and copy editing are all relatively expensive services if you do them through a company, but they are still some of the most important services I did for my first book.

You can have a fantastic story, but readers will rate your book poorly if it has grammatical errors.

For my first book, I used a company that charged me a total of $3,459.94 for content editing and proofreading. Other companies have similar prices, between $1500-$5000. Even freelancers charge from $17 an hour, making each of these services cost you at least $300, depending on the length of your book.

However, I didn’t have that much money to spend on my second book just for grammar correction, mainly because I was confident I could do a good job by myself (Obviously, I know I can’t do the job of a team of proofreaders, but for my ultimate goal I know I could do something good). I have five years of experience in article creation and editing, and I have worked on different projects as a freelancer doing content…
