Following the show’s successful debut run on the streamer, showrunner Steven Maeda weighs in on why Netflix’s One Piece broke the live-action anime curse. Chronicling the adventures of aspiring King of the Pirates Monkey D. Luffy and his crew the Straw Hat Pirates, the Netflix show marked the latest live-action adaptation from the streaming platform following 2017’s Death Note movie and the 2021 Cowboy Bebop show. Unlike these other efforts, One Piece garnered rave reviews from critics and audiences alike and was quickly renewed for season 2, a stark contrast from the swift cancellation of the latter and elongated development of a sequel to the former.
