Star Trek: Voyager‘s pilot episode was a clear response to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: The Next Generation. As the fourth series in the overall Star Trek franchise, Voyager was created in the shadow of its predecessors, most notably Deep Space Nine and The Next Generation. TNG had only recently gone off the air by the time Voyager‘s pilot, “Caretaker” premiered, and DS9 was in its fourth season. As such, Voyager took multiple cues from what had and hadn’t worked on both shows in order to craft its original premise.
