American Idol: Carrie Underwood Talks About Overcoming Shyness

Country superstar Carrie Underwood opened up about overcoming her shyness and the support she received from her husband. The singer got her start on season 4 of American Idol, which she won. Since then, she has become one of the show’s most successful winners and is now one of the biggest names in country music. During the 20th season of American Idol, which ended in May, Carrie returned as a mentor for the top 5 contestants as they dedicated a week to performing her songs.

Carrie has released nine albums since coming off American Idol, with her most recent being Denim & Rhinestones, which she released on June 10. Carrie is an eight-time Grammy award winner, including Best New Artist, which she won in 2007. She is also a nine-time CMA winner, an award show she hosted from 2008 to 2019. Carrie is also a 16-time ACM winner, one of country music’s most prestigious awards. Carrie is the first female to win Entertainer of the Year at the ACM Awards twice.

In a recent interview promoting her new album, Carrie talked about how shy of a person she is, saying, “I love being at home. I would literally never leave my house… I get nervous in crowds and in group settings and stuff like that.” Carrie married former NHL player Mike Fisher in 2010, who she said has helped her work through her shyness, according to People. She said, “He’s got a million friends and we’re always hanging out with them. So yeah, I feel like we balance each other out.” She said that while she doesn’t love to hang out with people all the time, Mike supports her and encourages them to interact with other people.

In the interview, Carrie also talked about what influenced her newest album, saying that it has more of a rock edge given her love for the genre. She also wanted to write music that would be enjoyable to go out and play on tour. She said, “We didn’t think about it too much. We made music that really felt good. Feels good to sing, felt fun to write.” Carrie has thought about going back on the road and touring again, so she wanted to create an album that would lend itself well to a live setting.

Carrie has enjoyed remarkable success in the music industry and has always come across as a very confident person and artist. So, hearing about how shy she is in her personal life might sound surprising, but it is just a testament to how strong of a performer she is, given how natural she is on stage. American Idol can be a daunting experience for many, but Carrie is the classic example of achieving success while still keeping your feet on the ground. Her new album, Denim & Rhinestones, is available to stream now.
