Alfred Newman’s “Street Scene” — moody and urban in the Gershwin manner — is outstanding here. “Stret Scene” is also whistled at the opening of Where the Sidewalk Ends (directed by Otto Preminger, with Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney, that irresistible “Laura” couple. Note also in How to Marry a Millionaire the music of “How About You?” — which begins “I like New York in June / I love a Gerhswin tune” — the great standard by Burton Lane and Ralph Freed as well as the Ridgers & Hart classic “Blue Moon.” But you didn’t watch the movie just for the overture , glorious though it be. The Movie stars Lauren Bacall, Bettry Grable, and Marilyn Monroe. Little references are made to Lauren Bacall’s husband (the old guy in The African Queen) and Betty Grables (Harry James of the trumpet and Ciribiribin — DL
