Harrison Ford on why we love Indiana Jones

The cast of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has been making the rounds to drum up publicity for the latest installment in the franchise. There was an interesting observation by Harrison Ford in a BBC Radio interview conducted by Ali Plumb.

Ali Plumb: This is a really big question for you, Harrison but I’ve got to ask you, why do you think the Indie movies have been so successful, so beloved and mean so much to so many people.

Harrison Ford: Because of the talents of the screenwriters and directors and actors that have poured their hearts and souls into it. The experience that I had making these five films … the films are peopled with some of the most amazing actors and characters. And the stories are so compelling and they mix adventure and humor and heart. But I think the thing that I most admire about them is the depth and the subtlety of the emotion … the importance of emotion in the in these films.

It was heartening to see that Ford’s first reference was to the screenwriters. But how he summed up his comment … referencing emotion … is a great reminder about this fact: When we watch a movie, we want to feel something. We want to be entertained, but we also want to have an emotional experience.

How does that happen? By living vicariously through the exploits of characters we care about in compelling situations.

A good reminder for writers.

Here is the entire interview with Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, and Boyd Holbrook.
