A.I. Licensing Deals & Anecdotes from a Literary Agent.
ChatGPT debuted to massive interest in late 2022, becoming a standard tool for a variety of users in absolute record time. The app boasted 1 million followers in 5 days, and over 100 million followers in 2 months time.
However, it also became clear that books (and other content) were used to train these A.I. tools, and no one had been consulted, let alone compensated. It’s no surprise then that months after the debut of ChatGPT, lawsuits began to stack up.
Now, of course, A.I. tools are everywhere and it has fast become something everyone is using, arguing about, and experimenting with, irrevocably changing many industries, including book publishing. These changes will absolutely continue to multiply in 2025.
