I still remember the day I got my first pitch accepted at HuffPost in October 2021. I called family members and texted friends, unable to contain my excitement.
I had many people to thank — God, the writers and editors who supported me, my loved ones. I was also grateful for a skill that helped me get to that point: learning how to pitch a story idea to an editor.
A solid pitch has many components (which we’ll get to in a bit). Unfortunately, even if you include all of them, your pitch may still get rejected. Many unrelated factors can play a role: how busy the editor is, if the publication is changing directions, if your idea is a fit at that moment, and more.
