When I sat with that Singapore offer, I realized it would require me to become more corporate, more willing to travel constantly, more comfortable with the kind of aggressive networking that drains me.

It wasn’t that I couldn’t do those things – I probably could have. But doing them would have meant suppressing parts of myself that I’d worked hard to understand and value.

My multicultural background gave me this ability to adapt to different environments, but it also taught me that adaptation shouldn’t mean abandonment of self.
