I work with authors of all kinds, and I’ve seen it many times. It’s tempting for many writers, once they have a book deal in place, to write their manuscript, send the file to their editor, and hope the publisher takes care of all the marketing, promotion, and sales of the book.

I get it. Writing a book is already a ton of work. The publisher should do their part, right? There is an aspect of this that is true.

However, if you’re not passionate about promoting your own book, I promise you, others will be hard pressed to get excited about it too, let alone read it.

I think we can do better.

Before I describe six steps to turn your book into a start up, let’s focus on this mindset first.

I’m assuming you’ve written a manuscript and you’re ready to publish. You’ve either signed a book deal with a publisher or you’re planning to self publish. You can find success (and readers) either way.

And if you’re still working on that part, check out this essay about “your first book deal” here.

Take Off Your Writer Hat

Once your manuscript is finished, I think it’s important to take off your writer hat and ready yourself for the next step of the process. You can learn to be your book’s first marketer, promoter, and sales person.

I know it’s vulnerable to put your book into the world, but in order to give your book the very best shot, I think it’s important to OWN IT. Own the fact that you wrote a good book, you’re proud of it, and it deserves to be in the world.

Owning it also requires you to put aside your fears about people reading your book, and not loving it. Who cares! Are you proud of it? Did you do the best you could?

So take a moment right now. Think about your book, and people’s reaction to it, and take a deep breath. Now forget them. Forget them all. This book is yours and it deserves to be read. This book is for you.

Once, you’ve owned it, and agreed to be your book’s first marketer, promoter, and sales…
