The memoir I connect with as a reader contains reflection, insight and asks questions. Those stories resonate with me the same way twelve-step program qualifications do. Even if a listener—or reader in this case—can’t see themselves in the facts of a story, if they can identify with the feelings, it’s magic. I’d written stories that were great over late-night drinks, as in: Buy me a drink and I’ll tell you about the night I was kidnapped. I was missing the loamy soil underneath the “vivid” situations, the emotional story.
