Bored Panda got in touch with Mary Waldron, the founder of the Facebook group, as well as with talented Nigerian fashion designer Oyinda Akinfenwa, the creator of her brand, Janore. Read on for our interviews with both of them.

Mary, the founder of the well-liked Facebook group, shared with Bored Panda that “things are running pretty smoothly” since our last article and that there haven’t been many big changes in the community.

In her opinion, a lot of dress designers go for eye-catching designs. “Whether or not it’s eye-pleasing is irrelevant when you want attention brought to your work,” she told us that this mentality might lead to some very bizarre design decisions. However, no matter how strange someone’s dress might look, it always pays off to be diplomatic and kind in person.

“I think the important thing when sharing opinions on another person’s outfits is tact, it comes across as rude if you simply say, ‘Your dress is ugly’ and the other person may not be as willing to listen to you, but if you were to say, ‘I don’t think that dress is very flattering for your figure, try this other dress.’ It sounds less critical and gives you the chance to give them a better option,” Mary gave some advice on how to tackle topics like dresses that look quite bad.

Meanwhile, fashion designer Oyinda shared a bit about her dress design process with us. “When it comes to my process, it varies depending on the design and my state of mind at the point. It could be fast like just envisioning a style and sometimes it’s quite slow which may involve drawing various patterns to make sure I get the right fit and styling necessary for each design,” she told Bored Panda.

“I wish people understood that it is not easy to actually create designs out of an idea, there’s a lot of creative process that goes into it and it will be nice if people were a bit more understanding of designers and also understanding the story behind their art.”

The designer said that it is very hard to create fresh and exciting new clothing. “I have to make sure that all the styling options I offer look just as good as the next one and also ensure that it fits into the category of outfit that I’m going for. Also to make sure that it can not only be styled differently but also styled to fit different occasions thereby creating ease as well as comfort for whoever is wearing it,” she explained.

Oyinda shared that her brand, Janore, is doing well and she’s currently trying to expand. “I’m trying to also make sure I create enough designs and meet necessary demands and also put my brand out to the world,” she said, adding that she’s learning more and more about business as time goes by.

She also shared a fashion prediction for this year with Bored Panda. According to her, one of the hottest fashion items in 2022 is “definitely” going to me beaded bags.

Earlier, Bored Panda had a wonderful in-depth talk about the ‘You can’t just slap some fabric together and call it a dress’ project with the founder of the Facebook group, Mary. She’s one of the people managing the nearly-62k-member dress-shaming community.

Previously, she told us all about the history of the subreddit and when she noticed that it started gaining more and more popularity on the internet.

“I noticed the group gaining more popularity about 6-7 months after I created it, and it was honestly out of nowhere. I never expected it to be such a big group, but honestly, I should have because, at the time, shaming groups were a big trend on Facebook,” Mary, the founder of the group, opened up to us.

“Looking back, I think the thing about shaming groups in general that brings people together and really resonates with them is the idea that there are things so bad out there that they feel compelled to share them with everyone for a good laugh, just like when a group of kids in school will see a teacher with a really bad tie and make a few jokes. To me, it’s that same concept, just on a much larger scale, that really makes these groups what they are,” she shared why she believes the Facebook group is so appealing to such a wide range of people.

“The group name was actually inspired by a comment on a post in the group, ‘That’s it, I’m wedding dress shaming,’” she added that she can’t remember the name of the person who made the comment, as she would love to credit them.

“The group was originally just a wedding dress shaming group called ‘You Can’t Slap On A White Skirt and Call it a Wedding Dress,’ but over time, as more and more people joined, I decided to allow other types of dresses,” Mary said.

“The name change was actually only a few months ago, after we had already become popular and I had a larger admin team, and we mutually decided that since we were allowing all types of dresses, we needed a more inclusive name,” she told Bored Panda back in August 2021.

In Mary’s view, what really sets bad dresses apart from good ones is impracticality. “The dresses I tend to really gawk at are the ones that look like they could fall off, tear, or just completely malfunction at any given moment. But outside of the group, I try to keep an open mind when it comes to fashion because a person’s taste is as unique as their own,” she said.

However, at the end of the day, what others think doesn’t matter as much as what you do: if you like a particular dress, wear it. “If a dress makes you feel happy when you wear it, then you wear it relentlessly because your body is your own to dress how you want to,” she told us.

Previously, Bored Panda got in touch with fashion designer Oyinda Akinfenwa, the creator of the Janore brand, who is an expert designer and makes multifunctional dresses that can be worn in a wide variety of ways.

“It’s hard to notice your own mistakes on your outfits until someone points them out because to you, it seems amazing because it is your work and you want to be proud of it, without realizing it may not be exactly as good as you think,” she explained to us why some designers are blind to their own mistakes.

“It’s really hard for creatives to give themselves criticism most times because of how hard we work to create the pieces we have, so most times we tend to not try to over-analyze the result,” Oyinda shared her thoughts with us.

In her mind, less is always more: any outfit can get lost in the ‘noise’ if there’s too much going on. “People tend to add too much on when the outfit they’re wearing already has a lot going on which makes it seem tacky. Also, it takes away from the outfit because no one will be looking at the outfit, just be confused about what is going on with the entire dressing,” she said.

According to the design and fashion expert, people should give their shoe choices the proper attention that they deserve. “People tend to wear the wrong shoes for certain outfits which really brings down the whole look, by the time you start admiring them and get to their feet and you’re disappointed by their shoes,” she said. Meanwhile, getting your nails done or wearing knuckle rings can “elevate your look” no matter what clothes you’re wearing.
