Masked Singer: McTerrier Reveals Why He Chose His Costume

The first contestant to be unmasked on The Masked Singer season 7 was McTerrier, revealed to be Duff Goldman, and Duff explained the reason why he chose the terrier as his costume. Duff is a legendary pastry chef and the executive chef of Charm City Cakes in Baltimore. He is a beloved star of Food Network shows such as Ace of Cakes, Kids Baking Championship, and Buddy vs. Duff, and most recently explored the science of food with his puppet friends on Duff’s Happy Fun Bake Time on Discovery+. Duff has played bass guitar in an alternative rock cover band made up of chefs called Foie Grock, whose name combines the French dish foie gras with rock, but he has never sung in a band.

The Masked Singer‘s theme this season is The Good, The Bad, and The Cuddly. McTerrier was part of the Good group, and competed against fellow Good member Firefly, Bad group members Cyclops and Ram, and Thingamabob from the Cuddly group. As McTerrier, Duff wore a furry white terrier costume with a red plaid Scottish kilt and black boots. Duff made history as the first contestant whose mask fell off while he was on stage. When Duff finished his rousing rendition of “Working for the Weekend” by Loverboy, during which he even played the drums, he nearly fell off of the stage because he could not see. He raised his arms to regain his balance, knocking the head of his costume to the floor. Duff quickly hid his face, and panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong, and Nicole Scherzinger covered their faces or turned their backs so that they did not catch a glimpse of his true identity. The head was placed back on him, and the panelists made their guesses. Robin thought that he might be Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers, while Jenny guessed comedian Jeff Ross. Ken’s guess was actor Mike Myers, while Nicole wondered if he could be Ewan McGregor. Everyone was excited to see McTerrier unmasked as Duff.

In an interview with TV Insider, Duff explained why he wanted to dress as a terrier for the show. He said that he was thinking about one of his favorite movies, Best in Show, a comedy that spoofs American dog shows. He shared that the winner in the movie was a “little Norwich terrier named Winky. I wanted to be a winner like Winky, so I wanted to be a terrier.” Duff revealed that he did not have much input in the final version of the costume and that the designers “went to town with it. The whole Scottish angle, they just sort of did that.” Duff said that it was fun for him because he then had the opportunity to speak with a pretend Scottish accent.

The terrier mask created one of the most historic moments on The Masked Singer when Duff’s identity was almost revealed when it fell off. Duff said that he was trying not to fall off of the edge of the stage because it is a big drop of about five feet. He said that he was terrified and did not know what to do, so he hid his head and turned around. He did not want to ruin the show because he knew that “if your mask comes off, that’s kind of it.” Duff shared that most of the television shows that he has done were “a lot smaller than a big FOX production, and it was such a huge show, it was a little overwhelming and I didn’t want to let everybody down.” Although Duff’s time on the show ended quickly, he had the time of his life. He said, “I told everybody that if they were judging based on just who was having the most fun, I definitely would have won.”

Duff certainly did not let anyone down with his enthusiastic and entertaining performance. Although he was technically unmasked twice in one episode, once by accident and the other on purpose, he did a great job of keeping his true identity a secret with his pretend Scottish accent. Duff clearly enjoyed his experience as McTerrier, and his vocal talents and drumming were impressive. When it comes to the contestant who had the most fun with the show, Duff takes the cake.
