Motherland: Fort Salem: How The Prehistoric Witch Could Fit Into Season 3

With Motherland: Fort Salem season 3 expected to premiere later this year, one new character has been confirmed that could impact the narrative: a prehistoric witch. The show, based in an alternate reality where witches are expected to join the United States Army because of “The Salem Accord,” a treaty between their people and the government, has gained a cult following over the years. Billboards have even been erected and a petition has been made by fans who believe Motherland ending with season 3 is a mistake. Based on the potential for intrigue that the new prehistoric witch, played by Joanna Areti, could bring to the table, fans might be right.

General Sarah Alder (Lyne Reneé), who was stripped of that title at the end of season 2, was supposedly killed after the Witchplague took over her life proxies, the Biddies, only to be seen at the very end of the final episode suspended within the Mycelium, presumably still alive. A lot of mystique still surrounds the Mycelium, which the characters refer to as “her” in order to show their deep respect for the powerful entity. Not even Izadora (Emilie Leclerc), a witch who has spent years studying it, fully understands the Mycelium. However, it is known that Alder created the Mycelium by singing a song of mourning in the wake of the death of her entire coven. The bodies of the fallen sunk into the ground, creating the Mycelium, a place where all witches now go when they die.

With most Motherland: Fort Salem season 2 characters expected to be coming back for season 3, one unusual character, a “Prehistoric Witch,” has been listed on IMDb as appearing in the first episode of the new season. Given that the show is set in modern times, this addition to the roster seems a bit odd. The witch could of course be a part of a flashback sequence, but given that Alder was left suspended within the Mycelium, Alder may be communing with an ancient witch from the past.

Alder is over 300 years old, kept alive through her life proxies, the Biddies, which are similar to the Eight Everlasting in The Vampire Diaries. Alder created the Mycelium at the end of the American Revolutionary War in 1783, and the former General is definitely old, but by definition, she is not “prehistoric.” If the Mycelium contains dead witches from before it was created, which is a possibility, then perhaps the Prehistoric Witch is in the Mycelium with Alder. Given that the former General is now suspended within the Mycelium, still alive, she could very well be communing with a prehistoric witch and maybe even an ancestor of hers.

The other possible, less fantastical explanation for the Prehistoric Witch is that she is a part of a flashback sequence. The series has featured flashbacks before, so it wouldn’t be out of the norm for Motherland. Some of the most fascinating details of the show have been revealed through flashbacks even.

Motherland: Fort Salem season 2’s unanswered questions still plague fans who are anxiously awaiting the final season of the series. The Prehistoric Witch is an interesting character to throw into the mix and is someone that could reveal much-needed answers. As the creators of Motherland: Fort Salem attempt to wrap up the sprawling world they have created, it might just be the Prehistoric Witch that can help to resolve the complicated web they have weaved over the last two seasons of the series.
