People’s Choice Awards 2021 Winners Announced: Marvel & Disney Win Big

The full list of winners for the 2021 People’s Choice Awards have been announced, with big wins for both the MCU and Disney. NBC and E! hosted the annual awards ceremony last night (December 7) in Santa Monica, marking an evening jam-packed with performances, emotional speeches and viral celebrity moments. The People’s Choice Awards have a long and impressive legacy, with the first ceremony occurring way back in 1975.

This year’s ceremony was hosted by actor and comedian Kenan Thompson (Kenan & Kel, Saturday Night Live), with special guest presenters including Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox, rapper Cardi B, and Black-ish‘s Tracee Ellis Ross. As usual, the audience was filled to the brim with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and creative teams, and after an impressive and ground-breaking year for both film and TV, the list of nominations was competitive to say the least.

Now, however, the final winners for the 2021 People’s Choice Awards have been revealed. The night proved a big success for both Disney and Marvel, with multiple projects nabbing the evening’s most coveted accolades. Black Widow scored the highly-coveted Movie of the Year award, with star Scarlett Johansson also receiving the Female Movie Star of the Year title. The first release of Marvel’s Phase 4, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, took out Action Movie of the Year, while star Simu Liu landed Action Movie Star of the Year. Outside of the major film and TV accolades, the 2021 People’s Choice Awards also honored Bruised star and director Halle Berry with The People’s Icon award. Johnson, a beloved Hollywood personality in his own right, won the title of The People’s Champion. Johnson even proved his title in real time, gifting his award to a Make-A-Wish recipient on stage in a heartwarming surprise. Aside from this sweet moment, many of the night’s mainstream award wins were also hugely celebrated, with the audience chanting “Loki, Loki!” as Hiddleston stepped up to accept his award for the MCU show.

The People’s Choice Awards 2021 winners prove an undoubtedly massive year from both Marvel Studios and Disney. Following the end of the Infinity Saga with Avengers: Endgame, the kick-off of the MCU’s Phase 4 had big shoes to fill. However, since their release, both Black Widow and Shang-Chi have proven their worth as Marvel hits, going a long way to diversify the MCU’s long legacy of white male-led solo superhero movies. For Disney’s part, the Ryan Reynolds-led Free Guy proved a box office triumph for the COVID-19 era and brought unique IP to audiences in a fun and action-packed blockbuster (with some help from Marvel references). With the Critics Choice Awards 2021 still to come, it will be interesting to see if the winners overlap, or whether professional critics have a different view on these massive studios’ impact over the last year.
