Sony Pictures has announced that the upcoming sci-fi thriller 65, starring Adam Driver and produced by Sam Raimi, has been pushed back from its original April 29, 2022 release date. The project is an original film that was written by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the duo behind the Emily Blunt-starring hit A Quiet Place, which they also directed. Beck and Woods will similarly be directing 65, and the film is also being produced by Deborah Liebling and Zainab Azizi. Actresses Ariana Greenblatt and Chloe Coleman also star in the film.
Deadline revealed that Sony has now officially scheduled 65 to open in theaters on April 14, 2023. No reason was given by the studio for the release date change, and the move comes after several other of the studio’s films were rescheduled as well. However, the date change for 65 moves it away from the competition of the April 29th release of the Liam Neeson-led film Memory. But more notably, the new date shifts the release away from Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which would have released just one week later. Interestingly, the Doctor Strange sequel is directed by Raimi, who is producing 65.
Beck and Woods previously collaborated with Raimi for his Quibi series 50 States of Fright on an episode that they wrote and directed as well. 65 was originally set for the high-profile early summer release date of May 13, 2022, before being moved up a few weeks to April 29th. A trailer for the film has not yet been released, and little is yet known about the film’s plot details.
