Sebastian Stan Says He Likes Roles That Freak Him Out

Sebastian Stan is naturally drawn to roles that scare him, like his upcoming film Fresh, the actor said in a recent interview. Though his claim to fame is playing Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Stan has been branching out as of late. He currently stars on the ongoing Hulu series Pam & Tommy as Tommy Lee, the brash, outspoken drummer of Mötley Crüe and husband to Pamela Anderson. For his role as Lee, Stan underwent a dramatic hair and makeup transformation involving prosthetics, piercings and fake tattoos.

On Friday, Stan will have another new project releasing on Hulu, the romance-thriller film Fresh. In this unique genre hybrid feature, Stan stars alongside Normal People‘s Daisy Edgar-Jones as the two begin a budding romance. However, Stan’s character is quickly found to have some questionable appetites, namely of the cannibalistic sort. Fresh has already made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival back in January, garnering a generally positive response among viewers.

Stan’s inclination toward darker or edgier roles is not necessarily a coincidence. In fact, Stan says his apprehension toward a character is what eventually leads him to taking a part like his character in Fresh. Speaking with IndieWire, Stan shared how his fears often wind up driving him toward his next project, calling fear “a good indicator” of a role he should take on. He said:

“More and more as I’ve gotten older, when I read something that really kind of freaks me out a little bit and I get the voice that’s like, ‘Don’t ever go near this,’ then I’m more drawn to it as a result. I find usually that fear is a good indicator of something that I have to sort of step into perhaps to understand better.”

Known off-screen as one Hollywood’s more low-key personalities, Stan seems to enjoy surprising audiences with roles they don’t expect. But his penchant for a good challenge isn’t anything new. Prior to Fresh and Pam & Tommy, Stan already had a several colorful characters on his filmography, from Tonya Harding’s abusive husband in I, Tonya to the corrupt Deputy Lee Bodecker in The Devil All the Time. Even the MCU’s Bucky Barnes has a layered, complicated persona given his alter ego as The Winter Solider. For Marvel fans who are familiar with the banter between Stan and his The Falcon and the Winter Soldier co-star Anthony Mackie, Stan is the introvert to Mackie’s extrovert — mild-mannered and easygoing in real life, in contrast to the grumpy, brooding ex-assassin Stan plays on screen.

Amid his varied résumé, Stan has yet to win, or even be nominated for, an Oscar. This is likely not the actor’s focus given the small-scale roles he has been taking on recently, though Stan seems due for a major award nomination as he continues to push the envelope with each performance. Regardless of what the award circles have in store, between Pam & TommyFreshThe 355, and the yet-to-be-released Apple TV+ film Sharper, 2022 is arguably one of the biggest years yet in Stan’s career.
